The concert commemorating the former chief conductor will be broadcast tonight at 8.15pm (CEST)
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will commemorate Bernard Haitink by opening tonight’s concert with Adagietto from Mahler’s Symphony no.5. The performance will be preceded by a short speech and followed by a minute’s silence.
Haitink, who passed away on 21 October, was chief conductor with the orchestra for 27 years from 1961 to 1988. The concert will continue under the baton of Maxim Emelyanychev with a programme of Joey Roukens’s commission Distorted Fantasy, Haydn Sinfonia Concertante, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck Beati Pauperes and concluding with Mendelssohn Symphony no.5 Reformation.
