Cellist Amit Peled featured on our podcast recently to speak about the joy of playing in cello choirs. In this video, Peled takes the solo cello part of Fauré’s Élégie, accompanied by cellists from the Mount Vernon Virtuosi: John Sample, Rachel Taylor, Kyle Victor, Mafalda Santos and Jiaoyang Xu.
’The most enriching part for us is the fact that you’re playing separate voices but the same instrument,’ Peled told The Strad. The ensemble sit in a semi-circle to maximise communication and observation of fellow players, called ‘mirror playing’ by Peled: ’you can see the bow arm, you can see the fingers, how people shift, how they breathe. So you become one. I always talk to them about having one sound.’
