The English folk fiddler and singer-songwriter Eliza Carthy has
received a £50,000 award from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation (PHF), one
of the largest independent grant-making foundations in the
UK.
Carthy was one of three composers named as recipients of the PHF's
2012 Awards for Artists. Five visual artists also received awards.
The PHF grant amounts to £50,000 over three years, and is given on
a no-strings-attached basis.
The 37-year-old Carthy is the daughter of singer and guitarist
Martin Carthy and singer Norma Waterson. She has made nine solo
albums since 1996, the most recent being last year's
Neptune. Her official biography, Wayward Daughter
was published in May 2012.
