Masters in Classical String Performance

The MA in Classical String Performance offers advanced tuition in violin, viola, cello and double bass, with specific focus on chamber music, audition preparation and holistic, creative self-expression.

The aim is to refine solo, chamber music and orchestral skills, whilst developing a greater awareness of the importance of the body, creativity and all-round musicianship. Students are invited to explore which message they really want to convey through their playing, as they prepare to enter the profession.

Students receive weekly 90 minute individual instrumental lessons from Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO) principals, regular technique and performance classes, chamber music coaching and intensive work on duo repertoire with a piano coach. Numerous other weekly specialised workshops and sessions are additionally scheduled. Expert tuition is offered in a wide range of performance practice aspects including audition techniques, orchestral excerpts, baroque and contemporary music styles, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, self-promotion and performance psychology.

Modules

Ensemble modules include weekly chamber music coaching (from duos, string quartets to octets), and a large ensemble exploring chamber orchestra repertoire.

The module Technique, Repertoire and Style includes a range of classes in baroque, new music, performance psychology, Irish traditional music, jazz, arranging and composition, Dalcroze and improvisation. Students can additionally choose electives from the wide range of options; visit www.irishworldacademy.ie for more information.

The Arts Practice research module allows students to explore any self-chosen aspect of their own performance practice, such as practicing techniques, breath, sound production, autonomy etc.

MA students present solo and chamber music repertoire in an ongoing series of concerts throughout Limerick City and the surrounding area and gain automatic acceptance onto the Irish Chamber Orchestra Academy Project, an exciting, international collaboration project with members of the ICO.

Working closely with such inspiring professional chamber musicians has been an amazing opportunity I will never forget.

The level of individualised care each student receives is incredibly rare in the classical music world. I’ve really enjoyed my time on the course and I’m looking forward to what’s coming next.”
