Think of the rediscovery of early music during the late 20th century and your mind is sure to turn to the Low Countries, and specifically to the Belgian and Dutch pioneers who led the way in the development of Baroque performance styles. But why was there such a concentration of talent in such a small geographical area? We asked players, teachers and makers from Belgium and the Netherlands for their individual perspectives on the early music movement in those countries – why it has been so influential, whether its legacy is still continuing, and what hopes and concerns they have for the future of Baroque performance.
