New research in the Turin archives has uncovered fascinating insights into the life of the violin maker Nicola Giorgis. Claudio Amighetti reveals why Giorgis’s daughter Francesca Maria took over his workshop upon his death in 1745

Nicola Giorgis is one of the most enigmatic 18th-century luthiers from the Piedmont region of Italy. Although some instruments bearing his label have survived, very little has been written about him, and facts about his life are scarce. Detailed research in the Turin State Archives has, however, uncovered a number of documents that shine a light on Giorgis’s career as a violin maker – and, tantalisingly, show that his daughter Francesca Maria followed in his footsteps…
