‘The Value of a Violin’ is on exhibition at the Design Museum Ghent during the Queen Elisabeth competition
This violin, made out of shredded bank notes bonded with resin, is exhibited as an art work but is also a perfectly functional instrument.
It is made by Tim Duerinck, a luthier who is conducting research on new materials in instrument making:
‘The art piece wants to ask critical questions, but also spark the imagination,’ he says.
‘What is the value of a violin? Are we open to change? Is it responsible to keep playing old music instruments and expose them to further damage through use? But also: what is possible if we give young instrument makers the support and chances they deserve?’
‘The Value of a Violin’ is on exhibition at the Design Museum Ghent during the Queen Elisabeth competition (29 April – 25 May).
