The New York Philharmonic has added a large tranche of material to its digital archives, completing a three-year project to digitise orchestral parts, programmes and other documents dating from 1943 to 1970.

The new material comprises more than 520,000 pages of marked instrument parts, encompassing nearly 1,200 works by more than 300 composers. The marks in the parts were made by the orchestra's musicians, reflecting the directions of conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Andre Kostelanetz and Arturo Toscanini. Some of the musicians also signed and dated the parts.

The next phase of the digitisation programme will focus on material from the founding of the orchestra in 1842 to 1908. The third phase will cover the years 1909 to 1942.
