Shaping the future of chamber music: a unique program blending rigorous artistry, mentorship, and global performance opportunities for tomorrow’s leading quartets
At Curtis Institute of Music, the world’s great young musicians transform into the leading artists, creators, and innovators. Curtis provides a unique, tuition-free education within an intimate, supportive environment, where students engage in collaborative and one-on-one study with renowned faculty. This small-school setting allows students to reach their highest potential through over 100 performances annually, spanning solo and chamber recitals, orchestral concerts, and opera. Located in Philadelphia, Curtis integrates cutting-edge initiatives that blend technology and entrepreneurship, fostering a vibrant community of artists who inspire each other daily and continue a century-long legacy of shaping the future of classical music.
The Nina von Maltzahn String Quartet Program is open to young quartets of extraordinary promise, formed for at least one year at the time of their audition. This program was established in 2013 and is led by the Dover Quartet, Curtis’ Penelope P. Watkins Ensemble in Residence. Quartet members benefit from frequent coaching with Dover Quartet members, additional guidance from Curtis faculty, and private lessons as needed.
Participants perform in two annual recitals, engage in masterclasses with visiting artists and quartets, and broaden their experience by performing contemporary music alongside Curtis’ New Music Ensemble. Through Curtis on Tour, quartets have the opportunity to perform on international stages, reaching audiences worldwide.
An important aspect of the quartet program is its focus on community engagement. Members participate in Curtis’ Community Artist Program, developing unique projects that blend artistry with community service and cultural advocacy. Additionally, they mentor and perform with younger students in Curtis’ Young Artists Initiative, fostering the next generation of musicians.
Graduates of the Nina von Maltzahn String Quartet Program have emerged as acclaimed ensembles, including the Grammy-nominated Dover Quartet, the award-winning Aizuri Quartet, and the globally-celebrated Viano Quartet. Alumni have received honours including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, M Prize, and recognition in the New York Times, showcasing the program’s influence and reputation. Listen to Portraits, a recording project the Viano Quartet developed during their residency at Curtis.
The Nina von Maltzahn String Quartet Program exemplifies Curtis’ commitment to excellence, leadership, and community—offering young musicians a transformative journey toward global careers in chamber music.
