The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBC SSO) has announced the death of its leader since 2012, violinist Laura Samuel. She was 48.

The orchestra shared a tribute on social media: ’This is an incredibly difficult day for all who admired and loved her. Everyone at the BBC SSO sends their deepest sympathies to Laura’s family at this time.

’Laura was an exceptional musician, leading the orchestra with insight and an indomitable spirit. Her unwavering character and generosity touched everyone who knew her, and the courage and composure she displayed during her illness was both inspiring and humbling.

’Laura will be deeply missed by us all and audiences across Scotland and beyond. The impact of her artistry and spirit will continue to resonate with the many lives she touched. We plan to honour Laura’s memory together in due course.’

Samuel was born in London in 1976 and studied at the Royal College of Music with Itzhak Rashkovsky. She was the recipient of numerous prizes, including from the Royal Over-Seas League, Musicians Benevolent Fund, Manoug Parikian Award and the Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition, which resulted in her recital debut at the Southbank Centre.

She co-founded the Belcea Quartet in 1994 and was a member for 16 years, during which the ensemble won first prize in the Osaka and Bordeaux International competitions. Worldwide tours with the ensemble included regular visits to the US, Far East and throughout Europe as well as a five-year residency at the Wigmore Hall, London.

As a teacher, she served on the faculties of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Samuel joined the Nash Ensemble in 2010. She played the ‘Nissel’ Stradivari violin from 1731.
