Michel Poulet was a member of the Ysaÿe Quartet from 1986 to 1995
Michel Poulet, the former cellist of the Ysaÿe Quartet, has died. The French cellist joined the quartet in 1986, replacing Carlos Dourthe, and departed in 1995, when he was replaced by Marc Coppey. The Ysaÿe Quartet disbanded in 2014 after a 30-year career.
Poulet was awarded first prizes in cello and chamber music at Paris Conservatoire in 1982. After joining the Ysaÿe Quartet, the ensemble took second prize at Italy’s Trapani Competition in 1987 and Portsmouth International Competition in 1988, with first and special prizes at the Evian Competition in France in the same year.
Poulet’s passing invited tributes on social media. Violist Louis Merlet described Poulet as ’a warm, demanding and caustic-minded colleague,’ while cellist Marion Oudin said ’his recordings of the Mozart and Mendelssohn quartet rocked my childhood, one couldn’t have hoped for better musical learning!’
