Hilary Hahn has had to withdraw from all of her concert engagements through the end of November as a result of a double pinched-nerve injury, the US violinist has announced on her Facebook page.
The cancellations include the stops on her US tour with the Berlin Philharmonic presented by Washington Performing Arts at the Kennedy Center, at Carnegie Hall and with the University Musical Society in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as well as a two-night engagement with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Ontario.
The same injury had compelled Hahn to cancel concerts last summer, including a tour of Europe with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and its performance at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland; a solo recital in Xi’an, China; and season-opening performances with the Shanghai Symphony.
Two colleagues will jump in for Hahn for the Berliner Philharmoniker dates, which feature Korngold’s Violin Concerto: Benjamin Beilman (Kennedy Center and the University Musical Society in Ann Arbor) and Vilde Frang (Carnegie Hall). In lieu of the Brahms Violin Concerto with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Jaeden Izik-Dzurko will be the soloist for that composer’s Second Piano Concerto.
Hahn posted the following statement to her Facebook page: ’I extremely disappointed not to be touring with the Berlin Philharmonic or to be returning to Ottawa this month. Unfortunately, healing follows its own timeline, and I have to respect that if I want to be able to play far into the future. I hope to be on the road again very soon, and I deeply appreciate all the support I’ve received during this process. To my colleagues and concertgoers, I am so sorry that I can’t be there with you!’
