The ongoing fires continue to affect the orchestra’s musicians and staff, while a fundraiser has been set up to help an LA Phil violinist whose home was lost in the Eaton Fire
The Los Angeles Philharmonic proceeds to cancel concerts as wildfires continue to devastate the region. The orchestra had previously canceled its performances the weekend of 10 January.
‘The January 14 performance of Benavides’ Neruda Songs has been canceled due to the impact the wildfires have had on our musicians and staff,’ the orchestra said on social media.
The orchestra reassured that ticketholders will be contacted with refund information. ‘Our hearts are with all the members of our community affected by the fires. Please stay safe.’
Members of the orchestra are among the numerous people who have lost their homes in the fires, including associate principal oboe Marion Kuszyk, trumpeter Christopher Still and violinist Aroussiak Baltaian.
LA Phil violinist Ingrid Chun has organised a fundraiser for Baltaian. ’Our dear friend and colleague, Aroussiak Baltaian and her elderly parents lost all their possessions and their treasured home of 15 years in the Eaton Canyon Fire,’ reads the fundraiser description.
’She has been a fixture of the professional musician community and has contributed greatly to the culture of Los Angeles through her music, teaching, and her gregarious, caring nature. She is adored by her colleagues and friends alike.’
The fundraiser aims to collect its target amount of $50,000 to help Baltaian and her family, with $24,000 raised as of 14 January.
’Thank you in advance for your generous giving to help her through this very challenging time. All funds will go directly to Aroussiak Baltaian and will be used toward the massive financial burden this disaster has placed upon her.’
As of this morning, there are four active ‘incidents’ across the city of LA, according to CAL Fire - the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The Palisades and Eaton fires are the largest, at 14 per cent and 33 per cent containment respectively, and have consumed over 37,000 acres of land collectively. At least 24 people have died in the fires.
