The Baltimore-based pedagogy tutor explains why going back to basics is essential for violin and viola teacher-training
Who are your pedagogy students?
At Peabody I teach a year-long violin and viola pedagogy class for students working towards a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree. I also give fi ve workshops a year on a Saturday at Peabody for practising teachers, each one on a different topic.
Do your students come to the class with practical experience of teaching?
It’s a mixture. A few have done no teaching at all, but are curious about it and think it might be for them. Others have already taught, particularly the master’s students who are often studying for a performance degree with an emphasis on pedagogy.
