An anonymous reader remonstrates with The Strad for characterising Marie Hall (below) as the first female violinist of the modern era

SIR,–The writer of the interview with Miss Marie Hall, in your last issue, was perhaps ill-advised in speaking of anybody as “the first woman violinist of her time.”

Now, though an admirer of Marie Hall’s playing, the question still arises in my mind, whether, at the present time, any such conclusion as to one being “first” can possibly be arrived at, and this, whether man or woman violinist.
