In this, the fifth of ten videos filmed in and around empty iconic venues, violist Lawrence Power plays Martyn Brabbins’s ‘Matchless Space’ in the London Coliseum.

Brabbins says: I was inspired to write ‘Matchless Space’ by the truly matchless viola playing of Lawrence Power, with whom I have enjoyed a long and fruitful musical friendship. Frank Matcham’s masterpiece, the London Coliseum, is without a doubt a matchless theatrical jewel. The music was conceived in such a way that the glorious sound and creative musicianship of Lawrence would fill the quiet empty space of the theatre, bring the air to life, as it resounded once again to the sound of music. (The listener may catch references to Puccini and to Britten, both composers we are impatient to hear once again in the London Coliseum).
