Comprising cellist Bryan and pianist Silvie Cheng, the Cheng² Duo presents a video performance of Moon’s Reflection upon a Spring (二泉映月 / Er Quan Ying Yue). This is an original arrangment of the song by Hua Yanjun (Abing), who lived from 1893 to 1950.
The track features on Cheng² Duo’s recent album Portrait, released on Centrediscs, which showcases world-premiere recordings, including four commissioned works by Canadian/American contemporary composers alongside two original arrangements of Chinese folk songs. All the composers are of diverse Asian heritage, and the duo aims to pay tribute to their own multicultural roots, while expanding the repertoire for cello and piano for future generations to enjoy.
Portrait has been nominated for a 2024 JUNO award, in the classical album of the year award (small ensemble).
Bryan and Silvie spoke on The Strad Podcast in 2023; listen to their episode here.
