Glenn Gould School, Toronto
Growing up in Toronto, I always knew of the Glenn Gould School (GGS) and its amazing facilities, world-class visiting artists and faculty. It was only natural that I audition for the school when I decided to study music.
Now in the fourth and final year of my undergraduate degree, I have come to appreciate everything this school brings. Not only is it a music hub for the whole of Canada, but it is also internationally renowned. Owing to facilities such as the Koerner Hall – which is often commended for its brilliant acoustics – attracting world-class musicians, we able to take part in and attend their masterclasses. And being part of Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music, the school is connected toevery part of the city’s exciting classical music scene.
Furthermore, due to generous donors and patrons, everyone at the school receives a scholarship, with almost half covering the full tuition cost. Days can be long but being in the school’s beautiful buildings does certainly help. The practice facilities are great, too, making it easier to get on with your busy day. In the morning I have academic classes before going to chamber music rehearsals in the afternoon. Then, in the evening, we have orchestra rehearsals. I also have private lessons during the week with two teachers, which is an option at the school.
The Glenn Gould School only has around 125 students, creating a tight-knit community of supportive peers and teachers. Because of its international opportunities, I have had the privilege of playing in countless masterclasses and performing solo in the Koerner Hall. After finishing this year, I hope to start an artist diploma at the school, which I was recently accepted for, and continue taking in everything it has to offer.
