The role will begin in August 2024
Venezuelan violinist Samuel Vargas Teixeira as been appointed lecturer in music (violin) at Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music in Columbus, Georgia, US. He will also become the school’s chamber music coordinator and teach applied lessons, string literature, violin literature, violin pedagogy, violin excerpts and a music appreciation class for both non-music and music majors. His violin studio will comprise seven students and the position begins on 12 August 2024.
Vargas Teixeira told The Strad about the appointment: ’I am very excited for this new chapter. I can’t wait to see what my students will do this year through the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University. Through music and the opportunities given by the school and my Foundation combined, I am confident my students will be impacted by a holistic approach and the opportunity to have a space for self-discovery and personal development to positively influence their own lives and the lives of others in the community.’
Originally from Venezuela, Vargas Teixeira began the violin through El Sistema. He went on to study with Sergiu Schwartz at the Schwob School of Music, from which he graduated in 2024 with a masters in musical performance and public musicology certificate.
As a soloist, he has performed in 40 countries and played with orchestras including the Simon Bolivar Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Prince George Symphony Orchestra, Venezuela National Philharmonic and Georgia Philharmonic, and collaborated with artists such as Gustavo Dudamel, Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Abbado and Christian Vasquez.
Vargas Texeira has won various competitions and awards, including the 2021 Sphinx Competition, 2014 Concertmaster Ambassador of the United Nations, 2019 Yamaha Young Performing Artist, 2019 Jefferson Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, and Atlanta’s 2017 GA Philharmonic Competition. He also holds the Pin Artistic Merits from ’City Key of Prince George’ and ’Central Bank in Canada’.
The violinist is also the founder of the Samuel Vargas International Music Foundation, which helps young musicians from 18 countries across the world to access classical music, regardless of financial or political circumstances. As a passionate educator, he also has a large online presence, where he shares advice and tips on playing.
