I actually heard a different story from the one in this article.
An Tianxu requested to play Rachmaninoff first. The announcer announced that he would be playing Tchaikovsky first. Then the announcer corrected his mistake- but in Russian.
As far as An was concerned, he'd just heard that the orchestra would be playing Tchaikovsky first. So he started off with Tchaikovsky.

This would explain why everything went fine during rehearsal- it was just a mistake made on the final day.
